Engery Efficiency for your home

Create cozy rooms and cut at the same time energy costs when buying new Window Shades.

Understanding R-value

Building materials are assigned an R-value according to the product’s ability to resist heat movement.

  • Window Properties
  • Window frames are typically metal, wood or vinyl. The R-value of a metal frame can be 5 to 20 percent lower than a wood or vinyl frame window. A single layer of uncovered window glass has an R-value of 1.75. Advances in glass coatings and assembly methods are improving the energy performance of new windows, but a window’s age, quality of construction, and the condition of sashes, weather stripping and caulking will impact how much air infiltrates or escapes your home.

  • Window square footage
  • Windows make up 20 percent of the typical home exterior and 40 percent in contemporary construction. Numerous large, uncovered windows can break your energy budget when they’re on a cold north exposure in winter or a sun-saturated west wall in summer.

  • Window Coverings
  • Heat moves towards cold. In the winter it’s drawn to cold glass to escape your home R-value explained (see illustration). In the summer outdoor heat moves toward the window of your air-conditioned home. The white exterior backing on all Hunter Douglas proprietary products reflects the sun. Using layers and cellular construction treatments at your windows can increase R-value by 1 to nearly 5 points. In extreme climates, that could save more dollars than you would spend to install windows with a higher energy efficiency.

Back to blogging again

Have for quite some time completely stopped my blogging activity. I was running into some problems with word press.
It was running like a snail on our server.
If someone tried to access my blog it took around 30 to 40 sec till the reader would see the blog. This is counting with a digital DSL cable connection. It was totally unacceptable.
In today’s time nobody wants to be waiting that long in front of the screen till the web page would appear. After some research I came up to use Expression Engine for my blogging. I found it was much faster and has a better tech support. It was easier to install than word press too, except the daily use requires a longer learning curve. It is somehow a little bit more difficult to use but more powerful than word press. I still have to work on some items like picture galleries and other small issues to have my blog running smooth again.

Blown Glass Pendant Lamps by Prandina

15 May 2012 at 1:09am

blown-glass-pendant-lamps-prandina-1.jpg

Prandina showed off four of their new blown glass pendant lamps at the Light & Building 2012 fair. We had to share them with you because these pendants are something to see. The new lamps are called Tiara, Gong, Bloom and Chorus and they all share a smooth, curved appeal. Tiara is pure elegance, and our favorite. The bottom part of the diffuser has a slightly truncated cone shape upon which a perfectly circular shape sits. Only a line of light separates the seamlessness between these shapes and gives this lamp such charm. Gong is like a cocoon; strong yet delicate encasing something beautiful. In this case, it's light. Bloom is the mysterious one; providing up and down lighting, this lamp gives off a nice diffused light to enhance the ambiance. Chorus is the one that plays with subtle angles on a cylindrical shape; depending where you view if from, its shape can slightly change on you. Go to Prandina for more details.

We love unique designs such as this Cabrits freestanding bathtub by Victoria + Albert. Inspired by and named after the Cabrits peninsula, the shape of the tub is meant to mirror the distinctive shape of the peninsula. You can't deny the shape is quite unusual for a tub. But that was the idea behind Cabits, it was meant to stir things up a bit in the freestanding bathtub world. Its shape is not only interesting, organic and beautiful to look at, but has ergonomic qualities that promise comfort and support. It's a great tub for those who value bath time and smart design that stands separate from the rest. Visit Victoria + Albert to find out more.

'Origine Du Monde, Maybe!' Chair by Italo Rota for Meritalia

7 Jun 2010 at 11:54pm
meritalia-chair-source-du-monde-1.jpg It?s a chair that brings ?creature comforts? back home. Dubbed the ?Origine Du Monde, Maybe!? chair, this unusual, ultra-modern chair was design by Italo Rota for Italian furniture house Meritalia. The soft hues complement the plush cushions perfectly, forming what the designed has described as ?uterine sensuality.? The cushions are made of memory foam which, in keeping with the obviously maternal theme of the design, reminds us of protection, rest and the future. The base is made from polished aluminum, irregular in shape, just like the chair concept as a whole, If you like unique, one-of-a-kind pieces, this is a must-see! Check it out at Meritalia. meritalia-chair-source-du-monde-2.jpg
