When looking for wall to wall carpets, one always faces the issue of colors. Manufacturers mostly run the Style of their Carpet only in six or eight colorways. Sometimes the offered color is acceptable, but mostly it’s just a compromise.
It does not have to be that way. One of the best custom programs on the market is called 7/40 Color Select program by GLEN EDEN Wool Carpets.
Do you need to change the background color of your choose wool carpet, or maybe it’s only the accent color?
It is no problem with the “7/40 Color Select” program by Glen Eden. It is very simply. Take any running line tufted carpet product, pick the colors you want to change and we send them to the Carpet Mill of Glen Eden. Once they receive the desired color requests for your Wall to Wall Carpet, they will send us in return color poms for approvil in seven working days. Approve the pom and up we go.
It is that simple. The Color you desire or need is just a simple choice away. So next time you are in need to change colors on your Broadloom Carpet, give Final Touch Interiors a call at (914) 769-3343 for special pricing and further details.
For quite a while I was using on my blogsite 24/7talk interior design a javascript thumbnail viewer which worked out quite well for me, only a 100% validation with W3C was never possible as some of the used expressions were not XHTML compliant. Something that I personally bothered me quite a bit.
So after searching for a replacement, I found a new javascript thumbnail viewer which is similar in its capabilities than what I used. I ended up with Highslide JS an open source JavaScript software, offering a Web 2.0 approach to popup windows. As per the Author Thorstein Hons, it does streamlines the use of thumbnail images and HTML pop-ups on web pages. The library offers these features and advantages

No plug-ins like Flash or Java required.

Pop-up blockers are no problem. The content expands within the active browser window.

Single click. After opening the image or HTML popup, the user can scroll further down
or leave the page without closing it.

Compatibility and safe fallback. If the user has disabled JavaScript or
is using an old browser, the browser redirects directly to the image itself or to a fallback HTML page.

I started to use some of the code already and except of some small missing necessary CSS adjustments it does perform perfectly and also validates as 100% XHTML.
As with any new Software one has to work with it for a while to get used to its strengths and or weaknesses. One reason also that I choose Highslide JS was that the Author has an active Support Forum with great support.

Height of Shade Installation - over 20ft in a narrow Stairway

Length of Shade over 15ft

Depth of Shade – no possible interference with Smoke/Fire Detectors

Visual Attractiveness of Shade – in open as well closed position

Installation went without any problems and after the usual adjustments, the motorized Solar Sun Screen worked like it should. It will close when the Sun rises (as required) and opens at dawn again to let additional light into the Stairwell.

Having to go out to Clients Homes or Offices and taking exact measurements has always been a time-consuming task.
My solution to this particular issue has been a product called Leica Disto ( a measuring device which measures the distance with a Laserlight - exact to a 1/16" of an inch).

perfect tool for precise measuring

It is a very versatile Product.
Great when measuring Rooms for Floor Covering Products such as Carpets, etc. Very efficient, as one does not have to fiddle along with a long 25' Tape. No Posibility of scratich Furniture or Walls. Specially great when measuring long Hallways of Offices during Business Hours.
Like last week, I was out on a Job, measuring a Room for a Lighting Design Project. In a very quick and fast efficient way, I had measured the import Details one needs to know with no running a long 25' Tape across the Room. Even the Client was surprised how fast it went.
Or another Example: Modern contemporary Home, one has to measure for large Triangular Windows for Shades. A 25' Tape would be cumbersome and probably not exact either as all the Windows are 15' above Floor and difficult to reach.
With the Leica DISTO it was a snap to do. Precise and fast and not time consuming at all. Hunter Douglas Window Fashions now realized the advantages of this Laser Tool now too and just commented in their latest Views Magazine (Magazine for HD Window Fashion Retailers), that they are working on an Interface, which takes the measurements from the Leica DISTO and transfers them into their Ordering System. Something I recommended already several years ago when attending their Training Seminars.

Quartz Surfaces by Caesarstone

In my last discussion about Choices of Kitchen Counter Tops, I talked about the use of Quartz Surface Materials for Counter Tops.
One of the Products, which we have successfully used for some of our Projects, is made by Caesarstone.

Counter Top by CaesarStone

It is comprised of up to 93% natural quartz -one of nature's strongest minerals - and backed by a comprehensive warranty.
CaesarStone's quartz surfaces, with their properties of stain, crack, scratch, chemical and heat resistance, are the perfect choice for carefree kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, flooring, tabletops, wallpaneling and more.

Bathrooms have always been tricky to decorate, but this new invention makes accessorizing the toilet seat a no-brainer. A California company created a toilet that's also a fish tank. Don't worry, the fish aren't swimming in the bowl, but in a special container where they are safe and protected from flushing. Who needs magazine?, you can enjoy some live entertainment instead.

Lighting Design is one of my favorites in the Interior Design Discipline. But I find not to many people pay enough attention to a well planned or thought out Lighting Design in their Home, Office, Dining Room, Kitchen or Bedroom, even though we spend most of our day in these rooms with the Light on.
To get to the point, I found just a couple of days ago a very interesting News Article about the opening of the new Deutsche Handelskammer in Hamburg the so called "House in House".

Here a very nice Slide Show
by Nimbus about Lighting Design with smdLED.

House in House Hamburg-Germany

The "House in a House" is one of the first buildings worldwide to be lit exclusively with energy-saving smd LEDs by Nimbus. More than 160,000 of these LEDs over all the five levels were required.
400 LEDs are in each of the 380 light-module panels suspended from the glass ceiling on each floor.

Due to the uniqueness of this lighting and its interaction with the translucent, transparent and reflecting material, the building acquires an almost "immaterial" appearance.

Depending on requirements, LED modules bathe individual areas in bright light for working or they illuminate individual zones only weakly so that, for example, people can see where they are going. The lighting for the building is absolutely energy efficient because it is possible to request only the level of light intensity that is actually needed. Dynamic light sequences which can be triggered when necessary provide an additional effect. When the touchscreen is touched, the LED modules emit calming waves of light which move across the ceiling and are hardly noticeable.
The dynamic light control system even conjures up natural scenes in the building: light clouds which slowly drift by above the heads of visitors.

Lighting Design with smdLED

Admittedly, the technology behind light emitting diodes - known as LEDs for short - dates back to 1962.
But only 44 years later, it came that the latest generation of ultra-flat smdLED semi-conductor diodes revolutionized our understanding of light and lighting.

Nimbus smdLED luminaires are a forward-looking alternative to halogen and compact fluorescent lamps.

They are flat, cool, economical and safe. Which opens up entirely new dimensions to planners and builders - in design, in lighting concepts and in actual use. The benefits are obvious. The ultraflat smdLED illuminats are perfect for a slim new and previously unimaginable design. These ultra flat luminaires only require extremely low installation depths and minimum fitted heights. The Lighting Designer therefore has the advantage of completely new installation possibilities and uses. Further they are cool. Just light no heat. I personally call it where the Form follows light: Ultra-flat

One other advantage one has to deal only Just light - No heat. The new nimbus smd-LED luminaires can safely be touched even after they have been in use for many hours. A patented, ultra-thin cooling plate in a special alloy cools the SMD-LED luminant. One other great Advantage: no risk to children, no source of fire. This opens up situations where one could could not use or install normal Lights.

The nimbus smd-LED luminaires operate for up to 50,000 hours, so they are extremely long-lasting and highly robust. Not even frequent switching on and off or vibrations will affect the luminant in any way.
They provide the full light intensity as soon as they are switched on. The risk of them failing is put at 3 to 1 million. And because they are so highly efficient, they use up to 90 percent less electricity.

Less is more this is a another favorite theme of mine. The nimbus SMD-LED luminaires work without dangerous electricity and harmful UV light. They operate with safety-low voltage (24 V). The highly compact converter may be positioned almost any distance from the luminaire: anywhere, even in a wall or ceiling junction box. And the non-UV light protects sensitive and valuable exhibits.
There is much more, but one would have to create a complete Website like the Nimbus Lighting Design Web Site

Why Wool Carpets? Why not? The oldest floor covering fiber known to man is the renewable fleece of the sheep. (A natural Product readable available, long before the hype of going green) But what makes wool so special? It’s in the genetic make up of the fiber itself. Wool has a scaly surface texture that adds flexibility to the fiber which impacts strength and resistance to abrasion during wear and the textured surface traps air, acting as an insulator in cool to hot temperatures. Wool’s impervious outer membrane protects the inner core from stain damage by keeping liquid spills on the surface for easy removal. The membrane acts as its own protective shell against spills. Wool has a natural spiral growth pattern that
gives wool a permanent crimp that will provide a life-time of resilience to traffic, furniture weight , stretching and abrasion. And wool’s high nitrogen content (combined with high moisture regain and high ignition temperature) makes wool naturally difficult to ignite and when burning, wool extinguishes itself. Wool Carpet is used on most all luxury ocean liners, Coast Guard ships and commercial aircraft and in the finest Casinos throughout the world because of its excellent fire retardant capabilities and performance under extreme traffic conditions. And equally important, wool is totally natural, renewable and biodegradable. The earth’s most friendly carpet fiber. Below are a couple of more
Wool Carpet advantages listed.

Wool Carpet Features

Renewable natural resource for an environmentally friendly
product

Naturally flame retardant fiber that protects those who live on
the carpet

Easy-Care properties that make maintaining a Wool

Naturally fiber of the Wool Carpet resilient for a life time of
beauty and comfort

Natural “hand”, no plastic or synthetic feel

So when you think to replace your Flooring in your home or
office, make a prestigious and practical selection by investing in
Wool Carpets. It always has been a favorite of
mine, long before the hype of going green started.

Sometimes priorities go haywire, like this last month.
My blogging and work on my website which I perform all myself came to an absolute stop due to a couple of new interior design projects I took on. Since a couple of years I do all of my interior design planning as well as architectural design with Vectorworks and InteriorCad, a software package I fell comfortable with and have good knowledge and also feel very comfortable to work with.
One of my new projects required me to jump onto AutoCad Architect and perform all my design work with AutoCad. Even though Vectorworks has a capable import function, it was just to cumbersome and time consuming. There was no time to play around and wait for problems to arise.
So I just had no choice than to use for my interior design work, AutoCad Architect as it had to be seamless integrated in the whole construction project. After a couple of days of using the software, I got used to it and at present time I have to say, I feel as comfortable as with Vectorworks.
It is the software most architects and designers use and it has the largest user base in the United Staates. Nevertheless I’m happy that I could add AutoCad Architect as an alternative software package to my repertoire.

My 3D interior design will still be done with my favorite package Vectorworks in combination with InteriorCad, something which is a pleasure to work with.
Another item which is currently a must is the immediate update of all my web pages in Final Touch Interiors.
The CSS Framework from Dirks Jesse called YAML-Yet another multicolumn layout has proven to be very robust and even my SE results have gone up, even though only a couple of pages have been written and implemented with the new CSS Layout. Further proof about the quality of YAML and it looks that a new version is around the corner.

A humorous article comparing web designers to architects. Taken from ”Brisbane Web Design Company Hello Media”

Dear Mr. Architect:

Please design and build me a house. I am not quite sure of what I need, so you should use your discretion. My house should have somewhere between two and forty-five bedrooms. Just make sure the plans are such that the bedrooms can be easily added or deleted. When you bring the blueprints to me, I will make the final decision of what I want. Also, bring me the cost breakdown for each configuration so that I can arbitrarily pick one.

Keep in mind that the house I ultimately choose must cost less than the one I am currently living in. Make sure, however, that you correct all the deficiencies that exist in my current house (the floor of my kitchen vibrates when I walk across it, and the walls don’t have nearly enough insulation in them).

As you design, also keep in mind that I want to keep yearly maintenance costs as low as possible. This should mean the incorporation of extra-cost features like aluminum, vinyl, or composite siding. (If you choose not to specify aluminum, be prepared to explain your decision in detail.)

Please take care that modern design practices and the latest materials are used in construction of the house, as I want it to be a showplace for the most up-to-date ideas and methods. Be alerted, however, that kitchen should be designed to accommodate, among other things, my 1952 Gibson refrigerator.

To insure that you are building the correct house for our entire family, make certain that you contact each of our children, and also our in-laws. My mother-in-law will have very strong feelings about how the house should be designed, since she visits us at least once a year. Make sure that you weigh all of these options carefully and come to the right decision. I, however, retain the right to overrule any choices that you make.

Please don’t bother me with small details right now. Your job is to develop the overall plans for the house: get the big picture. At this time, for example, it is not appropriate to be choosing the color of the carpet.

However, keep in mind that my wife likes blue.

Also, do not worry at this time about acquiring the resources to build the house itself. Your first priority is to develop detailed plans and specifications. Once I approve these plans, however, I would expect the house to be under roof within 48 hours.

While you are designing this house specifically for me, keep in mind that sooner or later I will have to sell it to someone else. It therefore should have appeal to a wide variety of potential buyers. Please make sure before you finalize the plans that there is a consensus of the population in my area that they like the features this house has. I advise you to run up and look at my neighbor’s house he constructed last year. We like it a great deal. It has many features that we would also like in our new home, particularly the 75-foot swimming pool. With careful engineering, I believe that you can design this into our new house without impacting the final cost.

Please prepare a complete set of blueprints. It is not necessary at this time to do the real design, since they will be used only for construction bids. Be advised, however, that you will be held accountable for any increase of construction costs as a result of later design changes.

You must be thrilled to be working on as an interesting project as this! To be able to use the latest techniques and materials and to be given such freedom in your designs is something that can’t happen very often. Contact me as soon as possible with your complete ideas and plans.

PS: My wife has just told me that she disagrees with many of the instructions I’ve given you in this letter. As architect, it is your responsibility to resolve these differences. I have tried in the past and have been unable to accomplish this. If you can’t handle this responsibility, I will have to find another architect.

PPS: Perhaps what I need is not a house at all, but a travel trailer. Please advise me as soon as possible if this is the case.

In my different Interior Design Projects, I have many cases which require a high end paint application. One Company I always can count on with perfect color match and superior paint quality is Fine Paints of Europe. As I have been quite successful with their European paint products, I thought it would be great to give out some detailed hints for a perfect paint job on a Front Entrance Door.
Please note the 32 Classic European Enamel Colors illustrated above are just part of the 4,000 colors available in a full range of glosses.
But now let’s start with the Job.

Select the appropriate primer. Use Fine Paints of Europe Oil Primer/Undercoat or Eco Primer/Undercoat for wooden doors, Ferrous Metal Primer for steel doors and Key Primer for fiberglass doors.

Wooden and steel doors should be sanded smooth with medium grit sandpaper(150) wrapped around household sponge or rubber sanding block - never sand without a backing. Fiberglass doors should be lightly sanded with fine sandpaper(220)

Doors should be washed with powdered detergent and water, rinsed and allowed to dry thoroughly. Special care should be taken on wooden doors where unpainted wood is exposed to make certain that no moisture has been retained. Exposed wood will normally dry sufficiently in 72hours.

Doors should be primed with appropriate primer. We recommend, I recommend, whenever possible, that the top and bottom of your door be primed as well to prevent moisture intrusion and extend the life of your finish. If using Key Primer, you should apply your Primer with an inexpensive, foam throwaway brush. Key Primer is to be thinned with water only - do not use Mineral Spirits.

After allowing Primer to dry overnight (4hours for Key Primer), doors should be sanded glass smooth with the fine sandpaper wrapped around household sponge or rubber sanding block. Doors should be wiped clean with cotton rag containing a splash of Mineral Spirits.

Apply first coat of Hollandlac Enamel in a thin, even fashion (as an option you may apply ECO), Allow first coat to dry overnight.

Sand door again with 220sandpaper to remove imperfections and provide good “tooth” for final coat. Once again, “tack” the door to remove dust with a clean cotton cloth

Apply final coat of HollandLac Enamel or Eco. Work quickly and do not go back on your work in an attempt to eliminate brush strokes as they will normally level out within 15 minutes of application. Second coat should provide total opacity. For additional durability and extended life, apply a third coat to the door’s exterior (optional).

By following these simple instructions, even a “first time painter” can expect beautiful, professional quality results and a finish that will look newly painted for several years. When painting doors which are in poor condition I suggest that you consider the use of ultra high-build Brushing Putty applied and sanded according to instructions. This primer will eliminate dents and dings and dramatically improve the appearance of your finished Door.

Even though our Winter is almost over and Spring is just in front of our Door, I thought some info for Radiant Systems is still appropriate as specially in the time of Spring and or Fall a Floor Heating System is really shining. Nothing better than walk or relax in a room where one has a Radiant Floor Heating System installed.
I want to point out that I attained most of my information from the Radiant Panel Association. The Office of Larry Drake (Executive Director of the Association has been very supportive, not only for this article also for all my needs when installing Radiant Flooring Systems for my Clients.) And at every installation, I was involved with, was a big success.

HYDRONIC RADIANT SYSTEM - Slab on Grade
Radiant tubing is embedded in cement. The tubing is typically attached to metal mesh with plastic ties. A four inch slab is most typical. The tubing is best placed in the middle of the slab. Full under-salb insulation is recommended for most residential application. Slabs have a very large thermal mass, which stabilizes temperature swings but slows response. This method is recommended whenever a slab is poured. Estimated Assembly R-value:R-0.69 - R-1.0
HYDRONIC RADIANT SYSTEM - Thin Slab on Subfloor

Radiant tubing is attached on top of subfloor with approved staples or plastic clips. A thin Slab of gypsum-based cement or cent is poured over the tubing. Typical slabs are 1.5inch thick when using 1/2inch tubing, but may be as thin as 1.25inch thick when using 3/8inch tubing. Gypsum cement is lighter than cement, but a little less conductive. Estimated Assembly R-value:R-0.69 - -1.0

HYDRONIC RADIANT SYSTEM - Hanging or attached below Subfloor
Radiant tubing is hung or attached to the underside of the joists in an airspace with insulation below. This requires higher water temperatures and has more limited heat output than other systems. It is often used for retrofitting when access from below is possible. Hanging systems have more even joist cavity temperatures than when pipe is attached in contact with subfloor joists. Estimated Assebly R-value:R-1.7 - R-2.2 (pipe + 3/4inch plywood only)
HYDRONIC RADIANT SYSTEM - With Plates below Subfloor
Radiant tubing is attached to the underside of the joists with metal plates to diffuse the heat. Insulation is recommended below the plates. This has higher water temperatures and more limited heat output than above subfloor systems, but plates make it more effective than hanging pipe from under joists. It is often used for retrofitting when access to joist space is available. Estimated Assembly R-value:R-1.3 - R-1.8 (pipe + 3/4inch plywood only
HYDRONIC RADIANT SYSTEM - Structural Radiant Subfloor with Aluminum & Grooves
Pre-manufactured 1.125inch thick panels have grooves for tubing and an aluminum sheet bonded to the board. In this case, the pre-manufactured panels serve both as the structural subfloor and as the channel into which the tubing is installed. The aluminum sheet makes the system accelerate rapidly and spreads out the heat. Tubing is installed 12inch on center in the grooves. Estimated Assembly R-value:R-0.6
HYDRONIC RADIANT SYSTEM - Boards with Grooves and Metal which are attached to top of Subfloor
Several varieties currently exist. One board has metal on the bottom and another on the top. Both serve to spread the heat laterally. Normally they are glued and screwed or stapled to the top of a wooden subfloor. Under some conditions the may be attached on top of existing slabs. These are modular systems with straights and end pieces that are assembled to make a channel for pipe. Different products use different pipe sizes. Estimated Assembly R-value:R-0.75 - R-1.1 depending on product.
HYDRONIC RADIANT SYSTEM - Sandwich Method with or without Plates on Top of Subfloor
Typically, 1inch x 4inch x 3/4inch sleepers are attached to the top of the subfloor and pipe is placed in between the sleepers with or without the addition of the metal plates. The metal plates typically cover about 80% of the pipe, adding significantly to the even dispersion of the heat. Estimated Assembly R-value:R-1.1 - R-1.5 depending on product and plates
ELECTRIC RADIANT SYSTEM - Embedded Cable or Mat
The electric cable, mesh or mat is encapsulated by embedding it in a 1/8inch to 2inch mud bed or in thinset mortar on top of the subfloor as required by the National Electric Code. It is available as a low or line voltage for warming or heating. Higher output systems utilize wider spacing and require a thicker embedding layer. When only floor warming is desired, the system is controlled by a floor temperature sensor. Heating systems are usually controlled with a thermostat, often in combination with a floor sensor. Different systems and embedding thicknesses allow for a variety of floor coverings. Check with manufacturer for limitations and recommendations regarding flooring goods. Estimated Assembly R-value:R-0.3 - R-1 depending on embedding layer.
ELECTRIC RADIANT SYSTEM- Self regulating Mat or Cable
This type is formulated so that as the temperature of the mat or cable goes up, the resistance increases, which limits the heating output to a fixed temperature. Some may be embedded in a mortar layer or used directly (as recommended by the manufacturer) under a wide variety of floor coverings. Estimated Assembly R-value:R-0.3 - R-1.0 depending on layer.
ELECTRIC RADIANT SYSTEM - Film Type installed from Below

With the film type product, elements are printed with a conductive ink and embedded in a film of plastic. Current products are line voltage. These systems have higher resistance to heat transfer than embedded systems since the heat must travel through an airspace and the subfloor. They must be installed with an airspace. Estimated Assembly R-value:R-1.7 - R-2.2 (pipe and 3/4inch plywood only) The listed Assembly R-values are illustrative estimates only and do not include the R-values of the floor coverings, which must be added to determine total system R-value. Note: Insulation is usually required under radiant heating systems. The Radiant Heating System Design should be designed and installed by qualified professionals.
