Fabric Types for our Roller Shades

Sheer and Casement Fabrics are chosen more for their beauty and decorative value than anything else. Some such fabrics may provide a small amount of sun protection, but don't expect too much from them. Sheer fabrics do not provide privacy, though to some extent they may provide a little during the day depending on how sheer they are and the balance of light between the inside and the outside of the room.

Translucent Fabrics allow light to enter through the fabric while at the same time providing privacy. Sometimes the location of an internal light source can affect the degree of privacy you can expect from a translucent fabric. Specifically, if there is a light new the opening, so that it is between you and the shade, then you can expect complete privacy. If, however, there is a light behind you, so that you are between the light and the shade, then you are "back lit" and the degree of privacy the shade can provide is less. This is not usually a problem with most translucent fabrics, but if a fabric is very light, we would like to make you aware of this characteristic. Translucent fabrics also provide protection from the sun for carpet, draperies, and furniture, which can fade and rot from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. They also provide some protection from heat and glare.

Solar Fabrics are a unique class of fabrics with special functional characteristics. By filtering out the sun's ultraviolet radiation, solar fabrics protect carpet and fabrics in draperies and furniture from rotting and fading caused by exposure to direct sunlight. They provide substantial protection from heat, glare on computers, and other situations where glare is a problem. Because of the way these fabrics are woven, it is possible to see through them during the day, while at the same time enjoying their functional benefits. Generally, it is not possible to see into a room through a solar fabric during the day even though it is possible to see out. However, they cannot be relied upon for nighttime privacy, because this effect reverses itself at night.
